Hiding and Seeking Knowledge-Providing Ties from Rivals: A Strategic Perspetive on Network Perceptions
(With Martin Kilduff, Kun Wang, & Wenpin Tsai., 2024, Academy of Management Journal)
- Within large organisations, people often share professional contacts, deriving valuable advicea and knowledge from these connections.
- Our research examines a critical but unexplored question: Do individuals with overlapping contacts behave competitively or cooperatively towards each other?
- Utilizing one of the largest datasets from social network field studies and two experiments, we discovered that perceived similarities in key knowledge contacts lead to rivalry. This rivalry then drives individuals to conceal and seek information, especially regarding their social networks, from each other.
